A fun housewares and gift shop called Details was there for years ... The place will always hold a piece of my heart because it's where my brother Bill and I had lunch while waiting to meet the real estate broker to see what ended up becoming my home. When that closed, I hear it was a few things, including an Austrian restaurant called Kaffeehaus that had great desserts.

The site of the A&P is now a New School dorm (red brick building on the right) with a Rite Aid in the ground level, which used to be an Eckerd Pharmacy. The Universal Gear next store was once hopping -- where the sales clerks would feel you up in the dressing rooms and actually encourage you to take the underwear out of the package.

But as the new crop of gays moved uptown, so too did Universal Gear, now doing brisk business in its Hell's Kitchen location.

This is what it looked like when it opened, but then it got a facelift, starting franchising and within no time, the entire chain went under. Daytime brings gawking tourists, but the evenings are still for partying.

Time Out tip: Visit during the daytime to peruse the Stonewall National Monument visitors’ center next door and learn the history and legacy of the bar and its eponymous social movement.

4. Branded Saloon

What is it?A Prospect Heights honky tonk that’s proudly queer, this mainstay offers a low–key option for those who want to share sangria and chill vibes with friends.

Why we love it:It’s an after–work spot where the baked mac and cheese is as good as the queer atmosphere, particularly if you come on country music night.

Time Out tip: Watch parties, open mics, trivia, drag brunch and more are great activities for those who prefer structured activities to socialize.

5. Suite Bar

What is it?Is the fact that this self–declared “gay pub with a local feel” is attached to a fast–casual Indian restaurant a big draw?

Its inviting atmosphere is complemented by captivating drag shows and a jukebox filled with classic hits, making it a perfect spot for those who appreciate a mix of lively entertainment and cozy relaxation.

2. I mention it because I hear there used to be a place hidden behind it called Alley's End, which was in the back of what was formerly A Chelsea Place, a combination antiques store and restaurant that went out of business in 1993.

Harvest was a great little bakery on the NE corner of 20th/8th. They had all the adult titles down in the basement for extra seediness.

Why we love it: Recent renovations have made the OG space a bit more upscale, but still comfortable and unpretentious for all types of hangs.
Time Out tip: Wednesday bring karaoke and happy hour starting at 10pm and every Saturday at 10pm drag queens and a DJ get the party going.
