The new year made welcome to Survivor legend Parvati Shallow, who came out as queer, and Erika Casupanan, winner of Survivor 41, came out as a lesbian. She went into Fabio’s bag, took his socks and put them on. I hope she goes all the way.

Gordon: Last night you mentioned that you might have done better on the older tribe.

C’mon man, nobody needs to ask that dude if he’s gay.
Gordon: You mentioned the edit, are you concerned with how the show might affect your everyday life?
Shannon: No, not at all.
Gordon: There was a pre-game interview where you referred to homosexuals using a derogatory term.
Shannon: Whoa, when did I use a derogatory term against homosexuals?
Gordon: It was in a pre-game interview with a different outlet.
Shannon: What’d I say?
Gordon: You used the f-word to describe a homosexual.
Shannon: You must’ve lost your damn mind, I’ve never used that word.
Gordon: Fair enough, I wasn’t there for that interview.

And she and I shared that in common and so I threw it out there and it worked. For example, Survivor 44 had six queer individuals with winner Yam Yam Arocho, Josh Wilder, Matt Grinstead-Mayle, Carolyn Wiger, Frannie Marin, and Claire Rafson. The LGBTQ+ players are ready for an all-queer season!

I’m thirty years old. I’ve got a lot of respect for him. For James Miller on Survivor: Palau, he used his frustration following a challenge loss by asserting, "Feels terrible to have my butt whooped by a homosexual, you know, but a lot of gay folks are strong, man! I went and buried them. No.
Shannon: I’m joking with you, man.
Gordon: But if I were gay, I’d be cool admitting it.
Shannon: Exactly!

Thank you, my brother. If your girlfriend is pissed off with you, your life is going to be miserable until she’s happy again. And I kind of made that speech when we got back to camp, but I was shocked because not one of them, not when I was making that speech, not any time else throughout the day, not a single person came up to me and talked about a final three strategy.

With Varner outing Zeke in this moment, it left a nasty taste in the players and viewers' mouths. I know they show me bashing him in episode one, but I came back and apologized. Yes, he leaned into his sexuality as a point of parody following the show, but his presence on the show was defining for the future of the program: it revealed that anyone can win, no matter their profession or sexuality.

'Survivor's LGBTQ+ History Isn't All Positive

As the show progressed in the early 2000s, many LGBTQ+ firsts were made.

During Survivor: Vanuatu, the season featured a man versus woman format. He was going and telling Kelly B. I was voting her out.

Reality TV World:  Were you surprised Chase and Fabio voted Holly out instead of you at the Final 4 Tribal Council?

Matthew "Sash" Lenahan:  I was shocked.
