Hedda

Hedda stars Tessa Thompson as a 1950s British socialite navigating a lavish party while confronting the return of her former lover Eileen (Nina Hoss).

It’s one of the greatest movies of the 2010s, telling the story of Chiron, a quiet and withdrawn boy growing up in Miami, in three parts. Rachel Sennott plays Danielle, a 20-something who runs into both her ex-girlfriend and her current sugar daddy (plus said sugar daddy’s wife) at a shiva. Thankfully, its 1987 film adaptation, directed by James Ivory, is equally charming and hopeful.

Despite some of the heartbreaking moments, it’s not a sad story at all — in fact, it’s a life-affirming ode to the worthiness of real, serious love.

This sweet love story is as much a coming-of-age film as it is a tender sapphic romance.

From the precise and careful pacing to the stunning cinematography and the story’s emotional wallop, it’s a perfect movie.

But I’m a Cheerleader points out the obvious in a stylized and extremely goofy way: Gay conversion camp is a great place to meet other horny gay people.

It’s certainly not without its challenges, but it’s a powerful love story with real chemistry.

This British film traces the unlikely whirlwind romance between a drag queen and a corporate executive in London. Domingo is equally tender and hilarious, giving a performance that really elevates the script.

This Taiwanese Netflix original follows a 13-year-old boy, Chengxi (Joseph Huang), whose absent father has just died.

Wilhelmina “Wil” Pang (Michelle Krusiec) is a young, talented surgeon on track to become chief of surgery at her hospital. It’s funny and ridiculous and stressful and, by the end, surprisingly sweet.

This Obama-produced Netflix original is far from the best when ranked alongside the many retellings of the period leading up to the March on Washington in 1963.

You should still watch it, though, because the director, Céline Sciamma, understands that a sidelong glance or a not so accidental brush of the hand can be more erotic than actual sex — and that there’s nothing quite so erotic, or romantic, as being fully and completely seen by another.

Ingmar Bergman’s Persona manages to convey abstraction and the feeling of a dreamlike stupor with a total clarity of storytelling.

It’s an endearing, enduring love letter to the high-school sweetheart, that first love you’ll always remember.

This character study covers a single day in the life of Feña (Lío Mehiel), a trans man who manages to encounter an ex, his sister, and his dad in the span of 24 hours.

Eventually, they each have to come to terms with the ways their loved ones deviate from their traditional ideals, and the process of getting there is silly, emotional, and ultimately charming.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Moonlight significantly altered the landscape of not just queer film but film in general.

Elordi plays Julius, a Korean War veteran who falls for his casino coworker Henry (Diego Calva).

After meeting at a bookstore, they quickly fall in love and then must deal with the respective traumas creating tension in their relationship. But thanks to convincing performances from Julia Lester as Hannah, who dumps her clingy boyfriend the night before prom because she’s a lesbian, and Ginny and Georgia’s Antonia Gentry, whose character Jess dumps her prom date after she catches him cheating, the night of high jinks mostly works.

However, when Ellie starts developing feelings for Aster, things get complicated.

The Handmaiden (2016)

If there’s one thing gays love, it’s horror, and this South Korean thriller directed by Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) is packed with suspense. Try not to fall in love with your sparring partner.

It shares Anora’s flippant perspective on violence, but the vivid, tender performances give it heart.

It’s a cute, corny, and slightly too cringey high-school buddy comedy. Her parents, meanwhile, refuse to fully see her, and their already troubled marriage strains under the weight of that avoidance.
