True, country music has never exactly been a haven for queer fans, but Underwood’s rare allyship in the genre made her decision to support Trump, whose own allies and administration have been historically anti-LGBTQ+, a disappointing move.
Carrie Underwood is a country music superstar who has captured the hearts of fans worldwide with her powerful voice, inspiring lyrics, and relatable persona. Whether that association leads to continued commercial success for Underwood, like it has for Aldean, remains to be seen. As an eight-time Grammy winner, Underwood has a seal of approval from the creative community.
It’s crazy. Public support for gay marriage in the U.S. was on the rise in 2012 before the Supreme Court legalized it in 2015. Yet Republicans have introduced more than 100 anti-trans bills in state legislatures already this year. Describing her career in country music, Underwood previously told Glamour magazine that the genre was different from others.
"You have the Bible Belt-ness about it (country music)," she said in an interview with the magazine.
Apparently, the radio success and industry awards Underwood took home for the song offset any concern she may have had about taking on the Aldeans’ political baggage.
In May 2021, Underwood’s husband, former professional hockey player Mike Fisher, appeared as a guest on former Daily Wire correspondent Candace Owens’ talk show.
Following her split from Romo, Underwood dated actor Chace Crawford for a brief period of time, but it did not last.
Similarly, prior to meeting Fisher later that year, she reportedly had a brief affair with British singer Oliver Trevena.
Underwood has been extremely candid about feeling Fisher was the one for her the instant she met him, despite her previous relationships.
In an interview with People magazine, she said, “I had dated guys and kind of knew, like, ‘No.’ Nothing was ever really wrong, but nothing was really right either.
‘And I had a lot more that there are today.’
Now, Underwood’s comment section on Instagram is flooded with questions from fans asking why she has chosen to perform at the inauguration of a man who opposed the Equality Act (in 2020, which was put forward to prohibit discrimination based on sexuality and gender identity), has made a slew of vile comments about women, appointed anti-LGBTQ+ judges into the Supreme Court and in appointing those same judges overturned Roe vs Wade, rowing women’s rights back by decades.
Politically, he is firmly anti-women and anti-LGBTQ+, and personally, who can support a man who was found liable for sexual assault?
To be clear, all of the criticism that’s being poured onto Underwood should also extend to the many men performing at inauguration events - the irony is, she’s one of very few women who has been chosen or at least agreed to perform.
Ultimately, her decision, while defending herself through claims that she wants ‘unity’ at a divisive time, has only caused more division in her fanbase.

As for Underwood, even if she still believes in marriage equality, it may not be apparent to her that the right’s unrelenting campaign against transgender people directly correlates with its effort to turn back public opinion against gay marriage.
Overturning gay marriage is clearly part of the plan, as evidenced by Justice Clarence Thomas’ concurring opinion in the 2022 decision to overturn Roe v.

She received some backlash from her fellow evangelical Christians over the comments, but Underwood had popular opinion on her side at the time. The House just passed legislation that would ban transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports at schools and institutions receiving federal funds.
I can’t imagine how that must feel. Traditionally conservative, Underwood surprised many with her support for gay marriage. His success was a clear indication of where the industry was headed.
In the wake of that success, Aldean points to newer country artists Parker McCollum and Cody Johnson as MAGA supporters who are “like-minded people now that aren’t scared to go out and talk about it.”
Despite her recent struggles in country radio, Underwood is easily the most high-profile artist ever booked to perform at a Trump political event.
And yet now, she’s made the one decision that could take her firmly out of favour with the LGBTQ+ community: she’s performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration tonight.
Underwood will take the stage to perform America the Beautiful, telling Yahoo she feels ‘honoured’ to be a part of the ceremony. In 2018, Underwood made public her history of miscarriages, which inspired her to pen and record the poignant ballad “Cry Pretty.”
Furthermore, her ability to empower women via her songs and life experiences has won her plaudits for her transparency and honesty regarding her problems with parenthood and pregnancy.
Underwood has spoken out and done things to support the LGBTQ community.
She encouraged supporters to wear rainbow colors during her concert in Sydney, Australia, in 2019 and donated the revenues to Australian Marriage Equality.

She feels that the most important tenet of Christianity is love.

Underwood didn’t publicly support any political party during the election and has previously said that she stays out of talking about politics because not all of her opinions are relayed with the necessary nuance.
‘I feel like more people try to pin me places politically,’ she told the Guardian in 2019.
