Miranda and Steve’s relationship came to a spectacular end with And Just Like That, the SATC revival series that saw Miranda come out as a lesbian—a sexual awakening that led her to pursue an affair with nonbinary comedian Che Diaz.
Speaking with Harper’s Bazaar, the star opened up about why Steve was never meant to be Miranda’s forever person.
As she told the British publication Attitudein 2020, “To say ‘queer’ means, ‘I’m over there, I don’t have to go into the nuances of my sexuality with you.’” This has not stopped reporters and political opponents throughout the years from referring to her as a “lesbian,” no ambiguity, end of story. Go have some transcendent kitchen sex of your own.
In the second season, Miranda makes an offhand comment that she used to be a “major lesbian” in the fourth grade.
The moment was never referenced again, with Miranda only pursuing relationships with men. Miranda is turning to face—to orient herself toward—new modes of sex and love, ones that hadn’t previously piqued her interest.
However, in the recent reboot, “And Just Like That,” Miranda embarks on an affair with nonbinary comedian Che Diaz, eventually coming to the realization that she is queer. She’s such a good match for Miranda, and her jolly, snarky British humor to Miranda’s… well, you know, Miranda’s kind of didactic.
The scene that really calls this to mind for me is the one after Miranda makes a blunder on live TV — and she feels as if the world is ending, and Dolly’s character Joy is able to gently deflate that.
It’s so great, right?
According to Nixon, Che—one of the fandom’s most divisive characters who ultimately did not return for AJLT season three—wasn’t quite right for Miranda, either.
“Che was such a breath of fresh air,” she explains, “but Che and Miranda are so opposite that they could never have really existed long term.”
Season three sees Miranda back on the dating market—fully single and ready to mingle.
Just don’t worry about it, okay? So it felt really fun. The dynamic isn’t unlike the one Miranda shared with ex-husband Steve (David Eigenberg), except Miranda, now, is fully herself. Nixon spoke to Variety about Miranda’s dating journey and her journey so far in the series — including why the lighter plotline Miranda’s living out this season feels like “a breather.”
Miranda seems definitively post-Che as she takes forays into the dating scene — we haven’t seen her single as a queer woman.

But others lammed the reboot for making Miranda queer, claiming it felt untrue to the original series. Steve was a wonderful antidote to Miranda, and Joy is a wonderful antidote in a very different way.
There are currently three single women on the show.

But ultimately, as Cynthia has tried to communicate to the press for years, pinning someone down to a single, inflexible term sort of misses the point.
Several years ago, Cynthia stumbled into controversy when she described her relationship with Christine as a “choice.” She later clarified that she didn’t mean her identity was a choice but rather that as a person attracted to people of more than one gender, she had chosen to open herself to the possibility of loving a woman.
A change of orientation, such as going from dating mostly men to dating mostly women, doesn’t even necessarily signify a shift in identity. It’s entirely possible that Miranda was attracted to girls when she was a kid, then had a mostly man-centric phase during her 30s and 40s, and now in her 50s is open to queer possibilities once again.
